Here's a picture of an Arrihead retrofitted with steppers controlled by Open Moco. It's still not quite perfect (actually the head is, but the motors aren't), but it works pretty good.
I will post some videos soon.

I really would prefer you try moding one of these gear heads. Much more affordable and more reasonably sized for HD DSLRs

There is absolutely no problem to adapt the motors to a Gearnex head. I just happen to be lucky to have access to an Arrihead.
If someone would like to supply me with a Gearnex head, I will be happy to motorize it ;-)

i'm really new to the site, but want to do this exact thing with my gearnex head. Can you describe a bit more how you set this up. (which motors/which shield you are using?) I have some 1.5A steppers laying around that i was thinking about using, but i'd love to do something smaller if possible, maybe try and make it battery powered, but i don't know enough about this stuff to know if that's even possible.
thanks in advance, and sorry for being so ignorant about this stuff
