The ultimate timelapse camera controller

Posted in

I am very close, at leat I hope so, to a solution for bulb exposure ramping with Nikon cameras. Nikon cameras have discrete (predefined) steps while bulb exposing which make it very hard to do any exposure ramping with these cameras.

Here is a tread on timescapse.org where I show that there could be a possible solution:

I am basically measuring the actual exposure time of my camera after which I create an xmp file so that Lightroom can automatically adjust the exposure of my image.

This opens up the way to create the ultimate camera controller. A hybrid solution that uses gphoto2 on an embedded Linux system in combination with my Arduino based shutterspeed measuring system and camera triggering electronics. This system can then change shutterspeed, aperture, ISO and everything else you need while taking a timelapse sequence. The system should be able to operate on its own, but the use of an external trigger will also be supported. That way this board can be combined with the NanoEngine through the RS-485 line. The NanoEngines take care of the motors, the Linux board takes care of the camera(s).

I have searched the internet to find a good, well supported, embedded Linux board. I like two of them:

The BeagleBoard:
In fact I owed one and sold it again... I don't like the 1.8V usage of the board and it holds a lot of connectors that I don't really need.

The NanosG20 board:
This board has an RS-485 port; that might be handy in combination with the NanoMoco boards. Although you can also use a USB to RS-495 cable. The board looks less complex and is 5V like the Arduino. I think that it will be easier to connect a camera to this board.

What do you guys think of this idea? Any thoughts about the ideal Linux board is more than welcome.

Man, you've really read my

Man, you've really read my mind - I've been telling Jay I want to build a linux SBC-based device running gPhoto for a while now!

I think it's a great idea, I'm just not in love with the NanosG20 for that price =( For about the same in USD, you can get the new Pandaboard, which is like the Beagle, but has a dual-core 1GHz processor. Follow the chain with gPhoto, dual-core 1GHz proc, the Qt GUI I'm working on... =)

If you want to start down that path, I have lots of thoughts on it - I spent some time buying prototype hardware (cheap Chinese MIDs) and experimenting. The nice thing about the SBCs is that they all have a plethora of GPIO, and the linux kernel has good support for all the same protocols we use on the Arduino.

I'm sure Sebastian with the Apertus project would like to see integration as well. He's doing similar work, but for live video and the Elphel camera.

Yeah, normally I am very

Yeah, normally I am very happy with the current dollar. It makes my trips a lot cheaper :-).

We have discussed this before, so I am not really reading your mind. It's just that I would like to work on something that combines the MicroEngine, Little Bramper and more stuff into one controller. The controller will be connected to a camera through USB, the remote connection and the PC-socket. That way you can control everything and you can measure your bulb speeds and take that into account.

I have not visited the Elphel site for a while, but aren't they using the BeagleBoard?

So whats next? Is there a board that you are considering? It shouldn't really matter at the end because it must be a generic Linux board I guess?

Yeah, but that weak dollar is

Yeah, but that weak dollar is about to kick my butt - going to Germany and Austria in October!

Any linux board is good for me - but will have to be powerful enough to run a Qt-based GUI, so I'm leaning towards the Panda, although there are some SoC's that are in the 1GHz range, and would be better for a custom build (which I would do for something I sell). I don't put much thought into them right now, as they change rapidly, and I'm months away from starting to design a bespoke linux-based controller.

So, my suggestion is get the most horsepower for designing around: the Qt GUI is going to be designed 800x480, meaning it will fit nicely on a lot of small LCDs, but will be "beefy" in memory and CPU requirements. You already have the communications code from the Qt app you downloaded previously.

Elphel doesn't use the beagleboard, they have a bespoke computer in there, but I think some of the apertus stuff relies on a beagleboard in addition to the elphel.

I'd not worry too much about RS484 on the SBC, a $25 cable is often cheaper than settling for an under-performing board, especially since there are a LOT of things you can do in parallel with controlling if you've got gPhoto on there! =)

I also thought of the Panda.

I also thought of the Panda. I might get one of those. A bespoke board with a good touch screen sounds great, but is a bit far fetched for me to design.

Well, I will first concentrate on my new mini board and the bulb ramping stuff that I made this week.

I got one of these:

Just enough to connect to my camera. The serial port can be connected to my laptop or an Arduino.
