Hi
So there's an awful lot of different belts out there. Different materials, different profiles with a Kevlar braid or steel core? So many choices anyone have any advise on what to use or not, a bad experience or a really good supplier!
cheers
D

5mm w/ HTD pitch is good
5mm w/ HTD pitch is good all-around choice. It can handle enough torque for just about any application. Rubber is more flexible, but poly works well too. =) Steel is hard to cut, and Kevlar is going to be more flexible, so easier to work with.
As for vendors, I've only dealt with wholesale vendors (we sell in 10' and 20' lengths @ DP), but SDP-SI or Misumi are both great small-quantity vendors.

I use a T10 belt. Bit wide
I use a T10 belt. Bit wide maybe, 16mm. But very, very strong. The belt has steel wires inside.

I just ordered 2.5 meters, so they can deliver any length you need.
And for the pulley:

I use the T-10/16-2 16 tooth pulley on my dolly in combination with a 1:20 gear on the stepper.
Thanks for your comments. I
Thanks for your comments. I notice shutterdrone that you specify the HTD tooth profile rather than the standard type. Are the any real advantages to this profile with a reasonably light and slow system?
Thanks again

D, the rounded tooth profile
D, the rounded tooth profile of HTD is generally more efficient and stronger with skinnier belts than the standard square profile.

Hi to everyone. I'm from
Hi to everyone.
I'm from Portugal and new to openmoco. I love photography and more technical fields like timelapse so i'm trying to put togheter my own Dolly based on the Dynamic Perceptions model.
Currently i'm trying to source the aluminium profiles in-country to reduce freight costs. I've read here in the forum the original Dolly uses 8080 profiles, specifically the 1030 (1 x 3 inch).
Here in Portugal i can only get Bosch Rexroth profiles, so im trying to get a 1.2 x 3.5 inch (30 x 90 mm) and other variants based on stock available. Any tips on selecting an alternative profile?
I've also contacted Grainger about the Dayton Gearmotor but they dont sell to individuals. So i'll have to get it at one of Dynamic Perceptions european distributors (and also the MX2 kit).
As for the belt and pulley, does anybody know the characteristics of the ones used on the original model, so i can try to get them here in Portugal?
Thanks for the attention.
T.
Titus, Talk to Matthias @
Titus,
Talk to Matthias @ Kids of All Ages (our German distributor) he can help you with metric profiles, or at least can provide you a much lower shipping on the standard 8020 #1030 profile. The standard belt we use is HTD 5mm belt, and you can use nearly any pulley that will work with that pitch.

Thanks for your reply
Thanks for your reply Shutterdrone.
I recon the HTD 5 mm stands for the distance between "tooths", right? Sorry for these questions but i'm not a mechanical engineer. :)
I'll try to find a pulley that fits the 5/16 inch shaft of the Dayton motor (i wish we had a unified planet regarding units :-p ). What is the outer diameter of yours?
As for the profiles, i got very good quotes on the Bosch Rexrot ones, so it's not going to be the same size as the 8020 - 1030 profile. But nothing that a little adaptation doesnt solve. For that purpose is the layout just for the platform available to the public (size, hole placement, etc)? Would make life easier. :)
Thanks for the help.
Titus
Titus, the hole placement is
Titus, the hole placement is not public, but it's not a secret either - it's only relevant to using the exact parts we use =) your side holes have to be at the right distance based on the width of your track profile, and the type of L-material you use - i.e. our placement will NOT work with that track. Hold whichever angle material you use against the rail and plate, mark two spots with equal material on all sides, and you're golden. Everything else is optional, except one hole to mount your ballhead. You shouldn't have to drill more than 5 holes.
HTD stands for "high torque drive" belt - it uses a rounded tooth profile instead of a more square one. 5mm is the pitch of the teeth - i.e. the distance from the center of one tooth to the next. I prefer HTD myself, although for most purposes it's more a matter of preference than utility, but any standard belt of at least 'M' rating will do. Going with a larger pitch won't do much for you at the loads you're looking at.
Our pulley is 17 teeth.
Of course, you know - we sell pulley kits with the pulleys, and custom idlers and mounting hardware =)

Thanks for the insight :) As
Thanks for the insight :)
As i said, I'm trying to get the most material i can find here, because its cheaper. For example, the Bosch Rexroth profiles are cheaper than the originals and its obvious why. They dont have to come all the way from USA... :)
Ok, i think i have all the info i need to ask prices to some supliers of belts and pulleys. I'll keep you posted of the progress :)
Btw, awesome product!
Thanks
Titus
