The MX2 uses an opto-coupler, which appears as a normal transistor on the camera side. As the opto-coupler is engaged, voltage is allowed to flow from the collector to the emitter.

For the Panny's, we've used production cables which have built-in resistors, but it should be fairly easy to build such a cable as well. You would definitely need to add these resistors your self to your cable, otherwise it won't work - as your camera would only see the voltage coming from the common line supplied by the camera, and therefore would not trip.
