Jib how to move a Jib - motion control

For a jib boom, you'll need more than a linear actuator - that might give you some distance raised or lowered (by lifting against a hinged joint, for example), but you'll also want to rotate the arm, I'm sure. So there would likely need to be another rotational axis added to the base.

As for steppers or servos? They'd both work well, given the right steppers and servos =) depending the controller you select for them, it could be just as easy to program either way. I think the primary difference is that servos will likely be more expensive in the larger sizes (and power), that you'll want.

I don't know what you mean by "stable"? Both types of motors, driven correctly, can hold a specific position. The primary difference (outside of the actual functioning of the motor, of course =) is that a servo has a feedback mechanism to tell you exactly where the motor is positioned, and a stepper lacks this feature but instead lets you tell the motor to move exactly one fraction of a revolution.
